10 Ways You Can Create Happiness
Sometimes it feels like we have more sadness than joy. More bad days then good. Sometimes we even lose hope. For most of my life I was unhappy. I turned to self-help books, depression medication, psychological therapy and emotional eating. I tried to strategize what circumstance or things I needed in order to become happy. Finally the answer became clear when I began practicing Buddhism in 2009. I read this quote from my spiritual mentor Daisaku Ikeda;
“Relative happiness is happiness that depends on things outside ourselves, such as affluence or social standing. While the happiness such things bring us is certainly real, it shatters easily when external conditions alter. Absolute happiness, on the other hand, is something we must find within. It means establishing a state of life in which we are never defeated by difficulties, and where just being alive is a source of great joy. Never seek happiness outside of yourself.”
I determined from that moment to look within. I became aware of the subtle shifts that make happiness possible. I began reminding myself of a few important things that I think we all tend to forget when things get rocky.
